Sustainability

Key Concepts

Sustainability (Environmental, Social) is the most important topic to be addressed by humans.

It is a complex problem, based on science, still not understood by the majority of consumers.

It can be measured.

It does not have to be addressed only (or mainly) with communication, but rather with concrete ideas and projects.

We encourage the industry to face the challenge of sustainability with pragmatism and long term thinking.

Sustainable strategies and supply chains

We act in the international markets of fashion, design and other important sectors.

We have developed significant experience in setting up and managing collaborative projects (between brands/customers and their suppliers) aiming at improving the sustainability performances of international and complex supply chains.

Examples of projects

Circular Luxury

Objectives

A significant amount of leather scraps are generated in the production of Leathergoods. The objective of the project was (and is) to find the best possible means to produce new materials for luxury using scraps.

Results Achieved

We have selected the best recycling technology, among several identified. We set up the waste collection chain, trained the suppliers, favored the interaction between the brand and the recycling company. The material is now in use.

Upcycling

Objectives

The legislative evolution is increasing the importance for brands to find innovative solutions for avoiding destruction of returned or unsold goods. Objective of the project is to develop an applicable upcycling supply chain.

Results Achieved

We have set up a specific Upcycling supply chain, involving different actors that are involved in the whole process and evaluating all operative conditions and legal frameworks. We are currently piloting a full disassembly and upcycling process.

Traceability

Objectives

The objective of our customer was (and is) to have reliable traceability data for a significant portion of its leather supply chain, until the country of farming of the animals. This involves the need to work with a multitude of suppliers.

Results Achieved

We developed a system and a SW platform that allow us to collect monthly traceability data from 80+ suppliers, covering 90% of the overall volumes of leather purchased by the brands. KPIs are calculated and visualised using a specific BI solution.

Green Energy

Objectives

Our customer asked us to find a suitable strategy to allow its most “energy consuming” suppliers of materials and components to shift to the purchase of electricity from renewable sources, without loading them with additional costs.

Results Achieved

We have involved several energy suppliers in a tender based on our customer’s requirements. In parallel, we have interacted with 85 suppliers, preparing them to the shift. The project allowed the yearly “save” almost 4.000 tons of CO2.

Chemical Safety

Objectives

The need of our customer was to engage with its suppliers in order to phase out from their production processes all harmful substances included in the Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL) adopted by the group.

Results Achieved

We have supported 40 brand suppliers to identify harmful substances present in the chemicals used in their production (over 10.000 in total), to innovate their processes to eliminate them and to identify suitable substitutes.

Master

Objectives

Sustainability is increasing in importance for fashion, hence the need for competent managers. We are therefore developing a master in “Fashion Sustainability & Industry innovation”, in cooperation with Accademia Costume Moda.

Results Achieved

The master has been set up, defining in detail the content of the courses and of three specific application projects, that include topics such as Circularity, Life Cycle Design, Sustainability Strategies and Innovation.

Life Cycle Thinking

We use the LCA techniques in an innovative manner.

We develop detailed analysis of individual supply chains and production processes, using a data structure deriving from the cost accounting.

We represent results through an advanced Business Intelligence approach and support our customers in the formulation of improvement measures through “What If” analysis and simulation.

Examples of projects

Leather LCA

Objectives

Automotive & Luxury companies are asking their suppliers to provide data on the impacts of their products, based on the LCA methodology. Our objective is to set up and maintain a complete system for LCA data calculation for leather.

Results Achieved

We have developed over the years a specific methodology and several models to represent the different possible production processes. We have delivered studies on more than 60 products produced all over the world.

Chemicals LCA

Objectives

The impact of chemistry often represent  between 40% and 60% of core processes of fashion materials. LCA datasets don’t have data on specific products. Chemical companies therefore aim at providing high quality primary data to their customers.

Results Achieved

We have developed over the years a specific methodology and specific models to represent several Chemicals production processes. We have delivered studies on more than 10 products and applied the results in downstream applications.

EPD Process
8.-Logo-EPD-Isotex

Objectives

In some cases, the market requires a third party verification on LCA published data (Environmental Product Declaration –EPD).  The EPD process approach allows companies to set up a “LCA generation system” and self produce EPDs.

Results Achieved

We have set up an “LCA Process” System, based on the ISO 14001 standard, as well as training material for all the functions involved in the process. The system allows companies to collect and elaborate LCA data for the issuing of EPDs.

LCA Simulation

Objectives

Life Cycle Assessment studies provide data that have to be correctly interpreted to set up a coherent program for impact minimization. Hence the need of our customers to be able to correctly formulate hypothesis for improvement.

Results Achieved

We developed a simulation technique, based on a “Hot Spot & What If  Analysis”. It allows users to simulate and evaluate how a change in important Process Influencers will modify the impact of the process and take consequent decisions.

LCA Dashboard

Objectives

The most important need of our customers is to be able to understand in depth the LCA data that are provided. The objective of the project is to allow customers to navigate into LCA data and to ease the analysis of the most relevant information.

Results Achieved

For this reason we have developed a LCA Dashboard, based on Business Intelligence techniques and tools, to allow: Quick and smart data visualization, as well as Smart data analysisand Communication towards customers.

LCA 4.0

Objectives

Life cycle Assessment and Life cycle Costing techniques are being developed for the analysis of production processes in different industrial sectors. There is a need for real time, high quality data coming from the “field” to feed the models developed.

Results Achieved

We have developed and patented a machine which, thanks to innovative sensors and SW, allows to obtain production data in real time and environmental impact and cost indicators. We call it “Sustainable Brain”.
